Govt. vows to boost FCID

01-Ravi-uThe newly set up Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division had received complaints against 169 politicians and persons who held top positions in the previous government, police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said yesterday. Of these persons, 31 had been prosecuted, he said. FCID sources said that the number of policemen attached to the division was not sufficient to process the amount of complaints it had received. The strength of the division would soon be increased by seconding policemen to it, sources said. Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, contacted for comment, said some

were trying to get the FCID closed down, while the number of complaints it received was on the rise. "Considering the recent developments it seemed that we have to strengthen the FCID with more policemen," he said. Police headquarters sources said that in addition to the FCID the CID and Colombo Crimes Division, too, had recently experienced a surge in the number of complaints received against politicians and officials who served in the former government.
