UNP to vote against constitutional amendments

gs-parliament-1-150x150The United National Party today announced that it had decided to vote against the proposed constitutional amendments. Party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe made the announcement at a media briefing held at Sirikotha.

The Working Committee and the parliamentary group of the UNP met to discuss the proposed constitutional amendments today and after three hours of deliberations, Ranil Wickremasinghe, Karu Jayasuriya and Joseph Michael Perera addressed the media briefing to announce the party's decision.

Mr. Wickremasinghe said that he had been willing to discuss on steps to reduce the powers of the executive president and all discussions with the President had taken place with that objective.
