FIVE KEY POSITIONS OF UNP TO BE FILLED WITHIN 4 MONTHS

sammelanaya_sirikota_2010_3A key feature in the changes to the appointment process is the opportunity given to members of the working committee and members of the parliamentary group.The posts of party leader, deputy leader, assistant leader, national organiser and treasurer will be filled with the common consensus of the working committee.

Members of the working committee should be appointed for the five key posts and in the event that there is no common consensus among the working committee, the key posts should be filled by secret ballot.

The appointed or elected members will be in office for the duration of one year and the party constitution empowers the working committee to extend the one year's duration by another three months.

However, according to the new constitution, the appointment of the party general secretary and the treasurer will be entrusted with the party leader and the number members of the working committee should not exceed 92.

The constitution also stipulates that whenever key positions of the party fall vacant, they should be invariably filled within two months.

The appointment to posts of president in the National Youth Front and Lakwanitha Front, which invariably entitle them to be members of the working committee, can no longer be filled by the party leadership alone. Those appointments should get the approval of the working committee and the advisory committee
