UNP requests to suspend the decision taken to reduce the no. of seats in Jaffna

UNP_new_lgo2The United National Party requests to immediately suspend the implementation of the decision taken by the Election Commissioner with regard to reducing the number of parliamentary seats for the Jaffna district from 10 to 6. Issuing a communiqué, the UNP stated that the prevailing issues in the North should be solved not through administrative decisions but through political solutions. In its communiqué, the UNP pointed out that it is unfair to take such administrative decisions when political solutions are being requested for. The UNP further pointed out that decisions with regard to the number of parliamentary seats for Jaffna should be decided after normalizing the public lives of the residents of Jaffna and conducting a public census. Recently, the Election Secretariat announced that it has been decided to reduce the number of parliamentary seats for the Jaffna district from 10 to 6 based on the 2010 voters' list. According to the 2009 voters' list there were 816 thousand 005 voters in the Jaffna district while it has been reduced by 300 thousand in the 2010 voters' list due to reasons such as leaving for other countries, deaths and changing their residences. The Election Secretariat stated that the decrease in the number of voters resulted in the decision to reduce the number of parliamentary seats for Jaffna.
