RaviK_PRESSOnly the ex-Tigers who had joined the SLFP were considered rehabilitated and patriotic, while those who criticised the government were unjustly branded as traitors, Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake said yesterday.

He told The Island that the LTTE’s former Political Wing leader, Subramaniam Sivathai alias Thamalini had been released from a rehabilitation camp, hailed as a true patriot and given nomination to contest the Northern Provincial Council Election scheduled for September on the SLFP ticket. The Tamils who criticised the Rajapaksa regime’s dictatorial policies were lumped together and branded as enemies of the Sri Lankan state, the MP said, adding that former LTTE leaders such as Kumaran Pathmanathan (KP), Karuna and Daya Master, who had joined the SLFP, had been given VIP security and were living luxurious lives, he noted.

According to the peculiar Rajapaksa doctrine, for Tamils to be accepted into society as equal and patriotic citizens, they had to support the SLFP and their failure to do so would automatically earn them the dubious distinction of being separatists and traitors, he observed. Karunanayake said that thirty four government politicians had been convicted in recent times of rape and murder, but most of them were now on bail and still throwing their weight about, due to patronage from the highest levels.
